What is the story about?
The Election Commission of India has commenced the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 12 states and Union Territories, marking a significant step towards ensuring cleaner and more accurate voter lists ahead of major elections next year.
Beginning from Tuesday, November 4, the exercise covers nearly 51 crore voters, about half of India's registered electorate.
What is SIR and its significance
The SIR is a comprehensive voter verification process undertaken periodically to maintain the "purity" of electoral rolls by removing ineligible voters and adding genuine ones.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar also said that for the past few decades, "almost all political parties have continuously complained about the impurity of the electoral roll."
The EC had conducted about eight SIR exercises between 1951 and 2004, with the last one held in 2002-04, according to a report by The Indian Express.
The current phase spans Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, where enumeration will continue till December 4.
