What is the story about?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that dense to very dense fog conditions are likely to persist across large parts of north, central and eastern India over the coming days, alongside isolated cold wave and cold day conditions in several states.
According to IMD's weather bulletin, dense to very dense fog during night and early morning hours is expected to continue over Himachal Pradesh till December 30, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh till December 31, and at isolated locations over Himachal Pradesh on December 31 and January 1.
Foggy conditions are also likely over East Madhya Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh till December 29, Jammu division till December 30, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal till December 31, and Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Odisha till January 1, the IMD said.
Cold wave and cold day alerts
IMD has forecast cold wave conditions at isolated places in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, north Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh between December 28 and 30, with Jharkhand likely to experience similar conditions on December 28.
Cold day conditions are also expected at isolated locations over East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on December 28, the department noted.
Western disturbance to bring snow and rain
The IMD said a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region from December 30.
Under its influence, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall or snowfall is expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and adjoining areas between December 30 and January 2, while Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may receive isolated to scattered rain or snow during the same period.
Temperatures remain low
Minimum temperatures dipped below 5 degrees Celsius at many places across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, and ranged between 5-10 degrees Celsius across much of north and central India over the past 24 hours, IMD data showed.
The lowest minimum temperature over the plains was recorded at 3.8 degrees Celsius in Rajgarh, West Madhya Pradesh, while Sultanpur in East Uttar Pradesh reported the lowest maximum temperature of 13.1 degrees Celsius.
Delhi NCR weather outlook
For Delhi NCR, IMD has forecast foggy mornings through December 30, with minimum temperatures ranging between 6-9 degrees Celsius and maximum temperatures between 21-24 degrees Celsius. Winds are expected to remain light, predominantly from the west and northwest regions.
