What is the story about?
Several major infrastructure projects in Mumbai, including new metro corridors, a pod taxi system, and a key tunnel, are ready for launch, but their much-anticipated inauguration has been postponed.
The proposed inauguration, scheduled for April 3, is now expected to be held on April 5 or 6, pending final confirmation.
According to The Times of India, the delay is not due to any technical or operational issues, as all projects have completed trials and received necessary clearances.
Instead, the inauguration has been cancelled because key leaders expected to attend are engaged in political meetings across states such as Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
Officials emphasised that while the infrastructure is fully prepared, only the inauguration schedule has been pushed back.
April 3 was set to be a massive milestone for Mumbai’s development, with several major projects scheduled for launch on the same day. The lineup included the debut of Metro Lines 9 and 2B, the bhoomipujan for the BKC pod taxi system, and the ceremonial launch of tunnel-boring machines for the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project. Even the opening of the Golden Nest flyover was on the agenda, until the entire event was cancelled.
About the projects
Among the projects awaiting launch is Mumbai Metro Line 9, whose 4.5-km first phase is fully ready. The line will connect Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon with four operational stations and will integrate with Metro Line 7, significantly improving connectivity for residents of Mira-Bhayandar.
Also lined up was the opening of Phase I ofMumbai Metro Line 2B, a crucial corridor expected to ease congestion in Mumbai’s western suburbs and reduce reliance on overcrowded road networks.
Another highlight is the proposed pod taxi project in Bandra Kurla Complex, a ₹1,016-crore initiative designed as a driverless, elevated transport system to improve last-mile connectivity in one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs. It was earlier expected to get its bhoomipujan on April 3.
Additionally, the ceremonial launch of tunnel-boring machines for the Thane-Borivali Tunnel, an ambitious 11.8-km twin tunnel, has been delayed.
Once completed, the tunnel is expected to reduce travel time between Thane and Borivli to just 15 minutes, compared to over an hour during peak traffic.
