What is the story about?
Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are expected to continue across large parts of north and northwest India over the next two to three days, before easing gradually, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD, in its weather bulletin said that the affected regions include Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The weather agency stated that cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely in isolated pockets of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and West Rajasthan during the next two days.
Temperatures drop below normal
As per IMD, minimum temperatures during the past 24 hours dipped below freezing at many locations in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad.
Several areas in Himachal Pradesh recorded minimums between 1-5 degrees Celsius, while parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi also experienced similarly low readings.
The IMD reported that minimum temperatures were significantly below normal by 3-6 degrees Celsius across Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Bihar.
The lowest minimum temperature over the Indian plains was recorded at 0.6 degrees Celsius in Bhatinda, Punjab.
Dense fog across North India
Dense to very dense fog is likely to continue during morning hours over northwest India and Bihar over the coming days.
Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and Delhi may witness dense fog till January 18, while parts of Uttar Pradesh could see reduced visibility till January 19, as per IMD.
Fog conditions are also expected over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam and Meghalaya during this period.
Western disturbance and rainfall forecast
The IMD attributed the prevailing conditions to multiple weather systems, including a western disturbance over the middle troposphere and an upper air cyclonic circulation over north Haryana.
A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region from January 15 onwards, the IMD said.
Under its influence, light to moderate rainfall or snowfall is expected over Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between January 15 and 18, with isolated rainfall over Punjab on January 17 and 18, it added.
Rainfall is also likely at isolated locations over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on January 13.
Delhi NCR weather forecast
For Delhi National Capital Region (NCR), the IMD forecast cold wave conditions at a few places on January 13, accompanied by moderate to dense fog during morning hours.
Minimum temperatures are expected to remain well below normal till January 14, before rising gradually from January 15.
