What is the story about?
A shocking incident at Anantapur railway station in Andhra Pradesh has raised serious concerns about the safety of gig workers. In a near-fatal experience, a Swiggy delivery agent was forced to jump from a moving train onto the platform while delivering food to a passenger, sparking widespread reactions on social media.
The incident reportedly took place when the agent boarded the Prashanti Express (number 18464) to deliver a food order placed by a passenger travelling in the first AC compartment.
The train had halted for just one to two minutes, and before the delivery agent could safely deboard, it started moving. In the rush to get down, he fell from the moving train onto the platform.
Food delivery platforms like Swiggy and Zomato allow train passengers to order meals by providing their PNR number, which is then fulfilled by partner restaurants at stations. While the service does provide convenience for travellers, this incident shows the hidden risks that delivery agents endure.
A video of the incident went viral, showing the delivery agent trying to get down from the train and falling onto the platform. Sharing the clip on Instagram, a user @hey_bijay wrote, “This is extremely disturbing. Last night, I witnessed a Swiggy delivery partner fall badly while trying to step down from a moving train. This is not an accident — it’s a failure of safety and responsibility.”
The incident has sparked outrage online, with many questioning the safety protocols in place for gig workers.
“So disturbing, hope he is ok,” a user wrote. Another said, “Boycott 10min delivery train delivery etc on every platform... which risks people's life.”
“This is a very serious safety issue. Customers should be clearly informed to collect their food from the train door/platform. Delivery partners should not be forced to deliver food to individual seats inside moving or crowded trains,” an individual posted.
Further details emerged regarding the Swiggy delivery agent, revealing that the agent sustained multiple injuries across his body. Sharing an update on the incident, the user wrote, "THIS COULD HAVE COST A LIFE. He has multiple injuries on his body, yet he was polite, calm, and sincere — no complaints, no anger. Just a man trying to do his job."
The user claimed that the delivery agent was fined ₹ 3,000 by the Railways for jumping out of the train.
As the video went viral online, Swiggy issued a response addressing the incident, confirming that the delivery partner is safe and unharmed.
The company stated that safety is its absolute priority and that protocols strictly prohibit boarding or exiting moving trains.
“Hi there, we’ve looked into the incident and are relieved to confirm that the delivery partner is safe, unharmed, and did not face any penalty from authorities. To help prevent such incidents, we’ve further strengthened our safety training to ensure all partners clearly understand, remain protected, follow protocols and stay out of harm’s way,” the company said.
