Ambiance and Concept
Nestled beneath a bridge in Bandra East, Downtown29 emanates a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, intentionally designed to be the city's social heart. Owner
Chirag Pattni envisioned the restaurant as a central meeting point, a place where diverse individuals converge to unwind and forge memories. The name 'Downtown' itself signifies this core idea of connection and constant activity, aiming to create a space that naturally draws people in and fosters a sense of belonging. This philosophy extends beyond just the food and drinks, focusing on building an experience and a community hub where patrons feel like an integral part of the vibrant scene.
Cocktail Craftsmanship
The beverage program at Downtown29 showcases a creative flair, with many cocktails undergoing a milk-washing process for an exceptionally smooth finish on the palate. Ingredients like maleic acid are frequently employed to further enhance this desirable texture. The Cacao Negroni exemplifies their inventive spirit, featuring cacao bean-infused vermouth and a rebalanced 2:1:1 ratio of gin, Campari, and vermouth. This adjustment yields a gin-forward profile complemented by the subtle, earthy notes of cacao. For optimal enjoyment, the suggestion is to pair the drink with its dark chocolate garnish. Another noteworthy concoction is the Delusional, a smooth whiskey-based drink incorporating strawberry and melon, which stands out as it is not prebatched or milk-washed, offering a distinct taste experience.
Appetizers and Starters
The culinary journey begins with the Downtown Nachos, a testament to their commitment to house-made ingredients, with chips, salsa, and guacamole all prepared from scratch, offering a familiar yet distinct taste. This starter pairs excellently with the Delusional cocktail. Moving on, the Wasabi Crispy Prawns, pan-fried and tossed in wasabi aioli with a chilli garlic seasoning, presented a minor disappointment as the anticipated wasabi kick was subdued. This dish was accompanied by the Thai Affair, a sweet, gin-based cocktail enhanced by pandan and milk washing, which would have been a more perfect pairing had the prawns delivered a more potent spicy note. The Corn Ribs, however, were a success – juicy, mildly spicy, and served with a sriracha mayo that could be tempered with a squeeze of lime, making them an ideal vegetarian option. The DT Fried Chicken, another starter, is noted for its juiciness, coated in a signature sauce and accompanied by a honey-mustard dip that significantly elevates the flavor.
Culinary Philosophy and Mains
Chef Ameyya Mahajani articulates Downtown29's culinary ethos as a fusion of familiarity and innovation, drawing from global influences including Asian, European, and Indian cuisines while maintaining approachability. The focus is on consistent, strong flavors and thoughtful presentation, catering to both sharing-style small plates and satisfying main courses. The menu itself is extensive, offering a balanced selection for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian diners. Among the main dishes, the Chicken Bhattiwala offers a delicious dhaba-style preparation. The Signature Bajra Pulao is a textural highlight, a hearty and nutritious single-dish meal packed with vegetables, cashews, paneer, and almonds. The Spinach Ricotta Ravioli is praised for its delectable tomato, basil, and olive sauce and well-cooked ravioli, offering a balanced flavor profile.
Specialty Plates and Desserts
Further exploring the menu, the Edamame Phyllo Parcels are a standout, featuring a creamy edamame mousse encased in crisp phyllo pastry cups, finished with a black olive dust garnish and an alluring aroma of truffle oil. Similarly, the Mushroom n Cheese Dimsum also features a prominent truffle oil flavor and is deemed tasty. For coffee aficionados, the Bailey’s & Coffee cocktail is a must-try; it's prepared tableside using an Aeropress, combining vodka, Bailey's, and dark roast coffee for a stimulating and delicious experience. Pizzas are available in a half-and-half format, with the Spicy Mushroom and Pesto Chicken options noted. The pizza base is commended for its thin, flaky, and crispy texture. The mushroom half, while not spicy, is flavorful, and the chicken half is equally tasty. Concluding the meal, the Banana Coconut Cake and Biscoff Cheesecake are recommended as delightful dessert options.
