The night belonged to Madonna, who returned to the VMA stage for her first performance in over two decades. Kicking off the show, she performed her new hit “Bring Your Love” alongside Sabrina Carpenter before launching into “Danceteria” with Charli XCX.
It was a masterclass in staying power, bridging generations of pop. The Queen of Pop was the most nominated artist and took home seven awards, including the coveted Artist of the Year. During one acceptance speech, she joked, “It’s been a while since I did one of these things, so I’ve prepared nothing.”
Taylor Swift Made History (Again)
Taylor Swift continued her record-breaking VMA streak. While accepting the Best Collaboration award, Madonna revealed she DMed Sabrina Carpenter directly after her team didn't respond for five days. The crowd laughed as Madonna recounted taking matters into her own hands to set up their winning collaboration on "Bring Your Love". Carpenter quickly clarified, to more laughter, “My team replies, just so everybody knows... but I respond faster.” It was a funny, candid exchange that highlighted the multi-generational star power of the night.
Rock Legends and Pop Tributes
The VMAs honored music history with two powerful tributes. The surviving members of Nirvana—Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear—accepted the Video Vanguard Award. The honor recognized the band's revolutionary impact on music videos, with a moving package honoring late frontman Kurt Cobain. The show also paid tribute to beloved icons we've lost. Kacey Musgraves performed a touching rendition of “I Will Always Love You” in honor of the late Dolly Parton, while RAYE, Teddy Swims, Sombr, and Adam Lambert delivered a soulful medley for George Michael.
New Stars Had Their Breakout Moments
While legends dominated, new talent also shone. British singer Sienna Spiro took home the award for Best New Artist, delivering a powerful performance of her song “Great Expectation.” K-Pop superstar LISA of Blackpink also had a major night, winning Best Pop for her solo track “Dream” and performing her new single “SaWaDiKa” with a stunning tuk-tuk taxi stage prop. These moments proved that even on a night honoring legends, the VMAs still has its finger on the pulse of pop's future.
