The intense heat of summer can wreak havoc on our bodies, leading to a cascade of discomforts. Common issues include overwhelming exhaustion, dizzy spells,
excessive perspiration, feelings of nausea, and persistent headaches. The risk of dehydration is particularly high, potentially causing severe damage to the kidneys. In extreme cases, heatstroke can prove fatal by leading to organ failure. The cardiovascular system also bears a significant strain, with many experiencing heart-related problems. Furthermore, the skin is susceptible to various issues like painful rashes and severe sunburns. Digestive disturbances, such as constipation and diarrhea, are also rampant. According to Ayurvedic principles, the summer season exacerbates the 'Pitta dosha,' a fundamental energy in the body associated with heat, which directly contributes to these prevalent health concerns during warmer months.
Cooling Fruits for Hydration
Embracing nature's bounty, Ayurveda highlights several fruits as potent allies against summer's onslaught. 'Bel,' or wood apple, is a remarkable cooling fruit that actively combats heatstroke, combats fatigue, and effectively addresses dehydration. Its natural properties also soothe digestive disturbances like constipation and replenish essential electrolytes lost through perspiration. Bel can be enjoyed in its raw form, as a refreshing 'sharbat' (a sweet, diluted drink), or even as a delightful candy. Lemon, with its abundant vitamin C and hydrating capabilities, is another key player in rehydrating the body and preventing heatstroke. It significantly contributes to maintaining healthy skin under intense solar exposure and acts as an instant energy booster, combating summer weariness. Oranges, lauded for their high water content and potassium, are excellent for preventing dehydration and bolstering immunity weakened by the heat, thanks to their rich vitamin C. They also provide crucial fiber to aid digestion, which often falters in summer. Mosambi, or sweet lime, is favored for its nutrient density, particularly potassium, which helps fight summer heat and tiredness by keeping the body well-hydrated. Its vitamin C content supports immunity and promotes glowing skin, while its cleansing properties benefit the liver and kidneys. The natural sugars in mosambi offer a quick, summer-friendly energy source.
Ayurvedic Cooling Preparations
Beyond fresh fruits, Ayurveda offers specific preparations to harness cooling energies. Gulkand, a sweet preserve made from rose petals, is a stellar example. Consuming gulkand with warm milk before bed is a traditional remedy for maintaining body temperature and cooling the system from within. Furthermore, barley atta and dalia (broken wheat) are celebrated as excellent summer hydration superfoods. Barley's fiber content is crucial for maintaining digestive and gut health, and its low glycaemic index ensures sustained energy levels without sugar spikes. The essential nutrients found in barley, such as selenium, magnesium, and phosphorus, contribute to overall vigor and power, making it an ideal grain for the hot season.
