Vaccines: Your Health Insurance
During World Immunization Week, Dr. NK Arora, a prominent member of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI), drew a powerful parallel
between vaccines and insurance. He stressed that just as insurance provides financial security against unforeseen events, vaccines offer crucial protection against serious diseases. This preventive measure is vital for the well-being of children, women, pregnant women, and adolescents, ensuring their health and reducing the overall burden of illness on the population. Dr. Arora urged everyone, irrespective of age, to embrace vaccination without hesitation, emphasizing its role in averting outbreaks and safeguarding long-term public health security. His message serves as a reminder that proactive immunization is a cornerstone of a healthy society.
Rigorous Safety & Development
Dispelling any lingering doubts, Dr. Arora firmly stated that vaccines approved for use within the public health system are rigorously tested and entirely safe. He explained that the development process involves extensive studies conducted both before and during human trials, with safety being the absolute top priority. He advised individuals to dismiss anti-vaccine rumors and misinformation, particularly those circulating on social media or through hearsay. Instead, he encouraged people to consult their physicians for accurate information and clarifications. Dr. Arora reassured the public that all vaccines available in India have undergone stringent evaluations and are safe for administration, underscoring the importance of trust in the scientific process and healthcare professionals.
Global Immunization Impact
World Immunization Week, celebrated annually from April 24th to 30th, aims to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease. The theme for 2026, 'For Every Generation, Vaccines Work,' highlights the enduring relevance of immunization. Globally, vaccines have achieved remarkable feats, saving over 150 million lives in the past five decades, which translates to six lives saved every minute. Currently, more than 30 life-threatening diseases and infections are preventable through vaccination. Despite this success, a concerning 20 million children missed at least one vaccine dose in 2024, leaving them vulnerable to preventable illnesses and underscoring the ongoing need for widespread vaccination efforts.
India's Vaccination Journey
In India, vaccines have been instrumental in transforming public health outcomes. The nation's immunization initiatives have been pivotal in eradicating diseases like polio and smallpox, and have also eliminated yaws and maternal and neonatal tetanus. Furthermore, significant reductions have been observed in child mortality rates, as well as the incidence of measles-rubella and tuberculosis. Full immunization coverage in India has seen a substantial rise, increasing from 62% in 2015 to an impressive 98.4% by January 2026. The proportion of zero-dose children has also decreased considerably. However, despite this progress, challenges persist. Only 76.4% of children aged 12-23 months are fully vaccinated, and India accounts for a notable 6.4% of global zero-dose children. In 2024, approximately 909,000 children remained unvaccinated, with another 454,000 receiving only partial vaccination, indicating areas where coverage needs to be strengthened.
