The Night Tray Concept
Many individuals face challenges in falling asleep, even when physically tired. Disruptions in sleep patterns are common, leading some to seek pharmaceutical
solutions. However, these can have adverse long-term consequences, making natural and sustainable approaches to sleep hygiene highly valuable. Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar advocates for a straightforward yet powerful bedtime practice: the 'night tray.' This involves keeping a curated collection of readily available household items by your bedside. The purpose of this setup is to provide natural remedies for common sleep disturbances, thereby promoting a more tranquil transition into sleep. This approach emphasizes accessible, non-medicinal ways to manage nighttime awakenings and improve overall sleep quality, encouraging a return to natural sleep cycles.
Essential Tray Items Explained
Rujuta Diwekar's 'night tray' is thoughtfully assembled with four fundamental items, each chosen for its specific benefits in aiding sleep. Firstly, a jug of water is included; dehydration or nocturnal cramps can often be the culprits behind waking up. A simple sip of water can alleviate these issues, helping you relax and return to sleep. Secondly, ghee, a staple in many Indian kitchens, plays a crucial role. Applying a small amount to the soles of your feet before bed is a traditional practice believed to induce calmness and enhance sleep. Additionally, a tiny dab of ghee gently applied inside the nose and ears in a circular motion may help combat dryness, reduce nasal congestion, and prevent morning sneezing fits. Thirdly, Mishri, or rock sugar, is recommended for those who experience dry throat or mild coughing during the night. Placing a small piece in your mouth can provide soothing hydration, allowing you to fall back asleep without discomfort. Finally, for instances where sleep remains elusive, a Rajgira laddoo (amaranth laddoo) serves as a light yet nourishing snack. Its natural sweetness offers a gentle energy boost, helping to relax the body and encourage sleep without being overly heavy.
