In the midst of the turnover of food halls around New York, the latest opening features a cheese conveyor belt and an omakase by a lauded Chicago chef with Michelin-starred credentials. Shaver Hall is opening in Midtown, taking over the now-shuttered iconic department store Lord & Taylor’s at 424 Fifth Avenue, between West 38th and 39th streets, on Friday, June 26.
The 35,000-square-foot, street-level food hall with room for 1,400 is at the new 13-story Amazon corporate office building, complete with three restaurants and 11 food stands, and developed by Dallas-based restaurant group FB Society. Its name comes from Lord & Taylor’s president, Dorothy Shaver.
Shaver Hall’s dining options include London expansion of Pick & Cheese, a dine-in shop
with a cheese conveyor belt; Chicago sushi chef BK Park’s omakase and a hand roll counter; also-Chicago chef Sujan Sukar’s butter chicken stand; Brooklyn’s F&F Pizzeria’s second location; NYC ramen restaurant Tonchin’s food hall sibling; and many others. There are communal and counter seats throughout the space, too.
Shaver has a bodega that sells to-go breakfast, lunch, snacks, coffee, beer, wine, and more. There’s the Layaway, the hall’s main cocktail bar, at the main communal dining space. The hall also boasts a self-serve drinks wall with 20 taps of beers, wines, and cocktails. In the future, it’ll host events like DJ sets, concerts, and more.
For opening day, Shaver Hall opens at 3 p.m. Regular hours will run from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Each restaurant and stand will have its own hours within that. Here’s a full breakdown of what to expect at Shaver Hall.
Shaver Hall’s restaurants
Pick & Cheese
This is the London cheese restaurant mini-chain’s first American location, featuring a 200-foot conveyor belt (exactly like those sushi conveyor belt restaurants), rolling along color-coded plates of Northeastern-produced cheese, charcuterie, and condiments. People at counter seats can pick up the color-coded plates corresponding to different prices, plus order dishes not available on the belt system. There are a few tables too.
Mako
Chicago chef BK Park is expanding his one-Michelin-starred Chicago omakase Mako into New York for the first time. The 12-seat experience will include bites of toro, braised abalone, and seafood consomme. The price is still being determined, but reservations can be booked on Resy.
Tallow Steakhouse
FB Society’s $49 prix fixe modern steakhouse will serve USDA prime steaks, tallow fries, dry martinis, Manhattans, and Old Fashioneds.
