Mashama Bailey — the James Beard Award-winning chef behind the Grey in Savannah who is also on the Time 100 list — may be opening a restaurant at the forthcoming video-art museum at 200 Broome Street, Canyon, which is scheduled to open on the Lower East Side in 2027.Caper reports that multiple sources identified Bailey as the chef attached to the project, which will include a restaurant, cafe, and bars. Public filings show Union Square Events (founded by Danny Meyer) is attached as the operator, while asample menu filed with Manhattan Community Board 3 includes dishes associated with Bailey. If confirmed, the project would mark a New York homecoming for the Bronx-born, Queens-raised chef. Eater has reached out for more information. — Melissa McCart

Bar CC, from Crane Club partners Melissa Rodriguez and Jeff Katz with former Overstory beverage director Harrison Ginsberg, opens on Friday, September 25, in the former Mel’s space at 85 Tenth Avenue, between West 15th and 16th streets. Ginsberg’s cocktails include a dirty CC Martini; a tequila-mezcal highball with passionfruit and tomato; and a clarified milk punch with apple, elderflower, honey, and chamomile. Wine director Abe Zarate oversees more than 1,000 bottles, while Rodriguez’s bar menu includes a burger; chicken medianoche; and fancy potato chips with caviar. Bar CC is walk-in only. — MM
DoorDash says it screwed up. Delivery workers say there’s more to fix.
A day after New York Cityannounced a record $131.5 million settlement with DoorDash over delivery-worker pay, Worker’s Justice Project says the payout is only part of what comes next. More than $115 million will go to over 260,000 workers in what the city called the largest worker settlement in New York City history. Worker’s Justice Project is now working with theDepartment of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) and Princeton’s Workers’ Algorithm Observatory on software that will allow delivery workers to document trips, earnings, and possible violations directly for regulators. DoorDash must also provide DCWP with detailed data every month for three years. “This is the beginning of something big,” Ligia Guallpa, executive director of Worker’s Justice Project, tells Eater. DoorDashacknowledged the late and missing payments, saying, “Simply put, we screwed up,” while maintaining that more than $83 million of the settlement stems from a disagreement with the city over how on-call time should be calculated. — MM
Katana Kitten partner’s opening a new bar
West Village Japanese American cocktail bar Katana Kitten’s partner Masahiro “Masa” Urushido is leaving his day-to-day role (read: he’s still a partner) to open a new bar,as reported by Robert Simonson. It is most likely the Winters Coming, opening in Chelsea at 204 Seventh Avenue, near West 22nd Street, as reported by What Now New York, in 2027. — NC
A cookbook store owner got arrested over Harry Styles pop-up line
Bonnie Slotnick owns the namesake cookbook shop in the East Village; pop star Harry Styles is running a pop-up shop during his Madison Square Garden residency two buildings away on the same street, which means there are often long lines forming outside the cookbook store. On Friday, September 18, Slotnick was arrested outside of her store because of “a confrontation with members of the pop-up’s line-management team,” per EV Grieve. She ended up going to the 9th Precinct police station, Manhattan Central Booking, and Bellevue Hospital, and was charged with “one count of menacing in the second degree,” she told the blog. EV Grieve followed up with Slotnick, who said, “I’m just so relieved that I’m in a very good mood relative to what I have been in for the last three weeks.” — NC
Florida import expands in New York
Miami Mediterranean chain Motek is opening a new flagship location in Midtown on Friday, September 25, at 60 West 57th Street at Sixth Avenue. This is the company’s third NYC location, with a fourth coming to Williamsburg later. — NC
September 18
There are a few weeks left to visit the Upper West Side sports bar that’s served the neighborhood for over 30 years. Jake’s Dilemma, at 430 Amsterdam Avenue, at West 81st Street, is closing on Sunday, October 18, West Side Rag reports.
“Jake’s has been so much more than a bar. It’s been late nights, game days, first dates, bad decisions, lifelong friendships, incredible staff, and more stories than we could ever fit into one post,” the restaurant wrote in the announcement on Instagram. “To everyone who has worked here, drank here, celebrated here, and made Jake’s part of their lives: thank you.” The owners, who say they lost the lease, are keeping their next-door sibling bar the Gin Mill open.
Jake’s Dilemma made waves in 2019 when a bartender apparently refused to serve a customer wearing a MAGA hat. In response, the bar was flooded with negative Yelp reviews. Jake’s Dilemma posted a statement to Facebook saying that it does not promote any political ideology, adding that the employee had been disciplined. In a similar case downtown in 2018, a judgeruled that bars can legally refuse to serve people wearing the hat because it is a political statement, not a protected religious practice.
Dickson’s Farmstand Meats expands into a grocery store
Dickson’s Farmstand Meats, opened by Jake Dickson in 2008, has expanded its Chelsea Market shop into a grocery this week, which will stock locally sourced produce, pantry staples, prepared foods, and specialty products alongside the brand’s existing whole-animal butcher shop. It will offer items from Pickle Guys and Burlap & Barrel, and collaborations with Davey’s Ice Cream, in addition to fresh juices, smoothies, and salads.
A robot-run chicken restaurant is expanding
A robot-run Korean fried chicken restaurant from New Jersey, 101 Chicken, is expanding to Brooklyn with two locations this winter: one in Fort Greene (570 Fulton Street, between Flatbush Avenue and Rockwell Place); and another in Williamsburg (513 Grand Street, near Union Avenue). Its first NYC location is inside the H Mart food court in Long Island City.
New owners in Carroll Gardens
It turns out that the team behind newer Williamsburg pizzeria Balera took over the Carroll Gardens Italian restaurant, Radisa Osteria as of Thursday, September 10. The restaurant originally opened in May 2025 from the group behind Aita with the name Osteria Radisa. It had closed temporarily in August for this handover, and it still serves dishes from the Emilia-Romagna region.
Baekjeong is back
Restaurateurs Joseph Ko and Bobby Kwak revive one of their Korean restaurants, Baekjeong, in a big way – with plans to open three new locations across New York City. The first is Baekjeong Black, opening in Koreatown at 49 W. 32nd Street at Broadway, inside the Martinique New York hotel. The two-floor space includes a first-floor with daytime lunch and a nighttime cocktail bar named Yangban. Upstairs is the dining room with tableside grilling and a pick-your-meats butcher display meant to feel like Seoul’s Majang Meat Market. Then the duo will open Baekjeong in Long Island City later this season and another in downtown Brooklyn in 2027. Originally, they had opened Baekjeong in Koreatown in 2015, but closed it in 2024; they later turned the address into an expansion of LA restaurant Ahgassi Gopchang.
Cafe Commerce opens for breakfast
Upper East Side restaurant Cafe Commerce is now open for weekday breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m., with dishes like sourdough pancakes, challah cinnamon toast, and lots of eggs courtesy of chef Harold Moore.
North Carolina comes to Sauced
An incoming seafood pop-up that pays homage to coastal North Carolina is taking over East Village wine bar, Sauced, this weekend. Sanderling Fine Seafood, from Madeline Sperling (who’d been at places like Zou Zou’s and Gramercy Tavern) and Katherine Rock, serves dishes like peel-and-eat shrimp cocktails; Romano beans with tonnato; onion rings with Carolina barbecue seasoning; and Atlantic Beach pies. It’s happening on Sunday, September 20, starting at 3 p.m., until everything is sold out.
Le Jardin Bistro now serves brunch
Lower East Side French spot Le Jardin Bistrohas launched a new weekend brunch menu with 12 versions of eggs Benedict. The lineup includes an LES pastrami Benedict on toasted rye as well as the Le Schmear, with smoked salmon, cream cheese, citrus, and herbs on an everything bagel. The restaurant is also offering a $39.95 special pairing one of its Les Classiques dishes with three brunch cocktails. Le Jardin, which originally opened on Cleveland Place in 1997 and returned in 2024 to 95 Delancey Street, serves brunch Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The restaurant also serves under-$10 martinis at the bar from 5 to 7 p.m. daily.
September 11
A new Peruvian spot from a chef and a rapper
Peruvian chef Jaime Pesaque (of notable Lima restaurant Mayta) and Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee (yes) are teaming up to open a new fast-casual Peruvian restaurant in New York City this fall. Cholapink is opening at 32 Spring Street, near Mott Street, in Nolita in October. The menu highlights grilled street food, also known as anticuchos, with ajis (marinades and sauces) like miso-glazed chicken thighs, pineapple gochujang pork belly, yuzu-amarillo fish, and spicy peanut mushrooms.
An NYC taco fave gets private equity funding
NYC’s favorite taqueria chain Los Tacos No. 1 is getting investment money from private equity firm TSG Consumer Partners, as reported by QSR. After the news was announced, people took to commenting on Los Tacos’ Instagram page, worrying about potential quality issues and increased prices (see: the discourse about Salt Hank’s acquisition by food hall behemoth Wonder). The team responded, assuring that they’re “definitely not messing with the tacos,” and that the reason they took the investment is so that they can “keep getting better at it” and expand. The restaurant recently partnered with Gap on an apparel collaboration.
An NYC artist and restaurant owner has died
Lucien Smith, the NYC artist who had revived iconic Chinatown restaurant Food, has died at the age of 37, as reported by Cultured. The restaurant had posted last week that it was temporarily closing.
Fall restaurant season is HERE

An anticipated Hong Kong-style diner finds its address
Turns out chef Lucas Sin is indeed opening his dream cha chaan teng Lok Kee at M Star Cafe in Chinatown, where he’d been popping up this late summer.
Mrs. and Mr. Swift’s NYC night out
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce dined at Ambassadors Clubhouseon Saturday, September 6, per a rep for the fancy Indian restaurant in Nomad. They dined in one of the private dining rooms, enjoying drinks and food. I’d bet they ordered the tableside whiskey cocktail, the Patiala Peg.
Top Chef winner pops up with bodega preview
Chef Danny Garcia continues previewing his forthcoming Latin halal restaurant, Only Goods, with a pop-up bodega this weekend. It’s taking place at 307 Bedford Avenue, near South Second Street in Williamsburg on Saturday, September 12, from 1 to 5 p.m.
A kaiseki anniversary party
Tribeca kaiseki Muku is celebrating its first anniversary with a special tasting menu this fall, featuring dishes like a rare Japanese sweetfish and harako meshi, a dish of white rice, salmon, and roe. The $375 menu is available through Saturday, October 3.
A 10-year-restaurant collab celebration
To celebrate Fish Cheek’s 10th birthday, the restaurant is teaming up with other NYC restaurants and bars for special collaboration dishes. Starting on Saturday, September 12, find the choo chee michelada and zapp popcorn chicken at Lower East Side cocktail bar Double Chicken Please; the razor clams with nam jim seafood at American Asian Hudson Square restaurant Kiko; the clam pie at both the East Village and Bushwick locations of Ops Pizza; and sliced flaky Thai coconut cake at sibling gluten-free Nolita bakery Bub’s. And then, starting on Monday, September 14, there’s a special burger at Prospect Heights Jewish bistro Gertrude’s.
September 4
A Vietnamese American bakery returns to Brooklyn
Some good news: After baker Doris Hồ-Kane shuttered her Vietnamese American bakery in February, she’s working on bringing back Bạn Bè to its original Carroll Gardens neighborhood.
Hồ-Kane launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the opening. She’s aiming to open in November at 115 Columbia Street, at Kane Street, in the Columbia Street Waterfront District.
The resurrected space will have a takeout window and a first-time indoor dine-in space. On deck are pastries and sweets like the beautiful bright-green pandan honeycomb cake and new stuff like pandan lime madeleines and pandan chocolate tiramisu. For savory vegeterian items, look for banh mi, Vietnamese crepes, and summer rolls, along with coffee and tea drinks.
The McNally son ventures into the restaurant world
Keith McNally’s son, George, opens his Tribeca restaurant, Faux, on Thursday, September 3, at 277 Church Street, between White and Franklin streets. McNally (the son) knows the restaurant life well, having worked at his father’s spots like Balthazar and the D.C. location of Minetta Tavern. Faux’s chef Kristina Ramos (who worked at Minetta in D.C.) is cooking up a coastal French menu, with highlights including broiled oysters and steak frites. The ground-floor restaurant includes a downstairs bar, Prevz, with late-night food and a bouncer. Book restaurant reservations on OpenTable.
Buy stellar baked goods for a good cause
Expert baker Natasha Pickowicz is hosting a community bake sale this weekend to raise money for Queens nonprofit Make the Road New York. Our Little Bake Sale features chefs like Pickowicz herself, Zoë Kanan of Elbow Bread, Morgan Knight of Saint Street Cakes, Flynn McCarry of Cove, Ali Domrongchai, and many others. It’s free to attend; each pastry is worth one ticket, which is $10. The event, which is a partnership with indie food publication Cake Zine, takes place on Sunday, September 6, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Little Island, the park on Pier 55 along Hudson River Park at West 13th Street.
Two NYC restaurants take over Times Square Red Lobster
A restaurant group behind NYC restaurants, including American brasserie the Smith and pizzeria Parla, is taking over the recently shuttered Red Lobster in Times Square, as reported by the New York Post. The business plans to open a fifth location of the Smith and a pizza-slice spinoff of Parla at a two-floor address at 582 Seventh Avenue, between West 41st and 42nd streets, set to debut in 2028.
A bread bakery grows in Crown Heights
In more bakery news, Apt. 2 Bread, a micro-bakery best known for its focaccia, is working on opening a bread-focused bakery named Boots Bread in Crown Heights. Carla Finley is teaming up with Megan Wang for the new venture. When the bakery opens, expect all sorts of breads made with regional grains.
What’s happening with Food?
Looks like Chinatown restaurant Food, the revitalized Chinatown restaurant now run by artist Lucien Smith, seems to have “closed until further notice,” per its Instagram.
A Radio Bakery branch is temporarily closed
The Greenpoint location of Radio Bakery is temporarily closing for renovations, from Tuesday, September 1, through Monday, September 21. To help ease the demand, the Prospect Heights location is staying open later (until 6 p.m.) through Sunday, September 13.
An Austin bar pop-up worth going to
One of my personal favorite bars ever, Austin’s Nickel City, is coming to New York City for a pop-up this month. Owner Travis Tober is taking over the bar of Romeo’s in the East Village, on Wednesday, September 9, from 8 to 11 p.m., with Dr Pepper Old Fashioneds, Mexican martinis, and more.
