Tokyo’s Tonkatsu Narikura, widely regarded as one of the best katsu restaurants in the world (and famously difficult to book), will pop up at the Brothers Sushi for two days only this month. The pop-up will be hosted on Sunday, July 19, at Brothers Sushi in Culver
City, and Monday, July 20, at the Santa Monica location.
For the pop-up, Tonkatsu Narikura’s chef Seizo Mitani will fly in from Japan to serve a special six-course menu alongside Brothers Sushi chef-owner Mark Okuda. The menu will feature Narikura’s “blonde” tonkatsu, which is cooked low and slow in contrast to the quick fry more popular stateside. Mitani will bring breadcrumbs from Japan and use pork from Peads and Barnetts for the katsu. Tickets cost $150 per person and will include the six-course meal, plus rice, soup, and dessert. Book a reservation through Tock for Culver City or Santa Monica.
Mistral enters a new era
Restaurateur Jonah Freedman, known for Freedman’s and Greekman’s, now helms Sherman Oaks French institution Mistral alongside partner and culinary director Josh Migdal. Henri Abergel, who has owned and run Mistral since opening it in 1988, will retire. Freedman and Migdal will rework Mistral’s interior and menu with plans to reimagine the restaurant this summer with dishes such as goat cheese cigars with honey and vadouvan, steak frites, and French onion soup. After the re-opening, the pair will launch Henri’s, a raw bar, in the adjoining space.
