In the 1890s, the Heights was a streetcar suburb for those escaping Houston’s density, but when it was annexed by Houston in 1918 it quickly evolved into one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods. Today, it’s a unique blend of vintage Victorian homes,
towering townhouses, independent shops, acclaimed restaurants, and neighborhood bars, all connected by a strong sense of community.
The result is an area that balances old Houston charm with a contemporary, trendy vibe. That makes it the perfect spot for a lazy patio brunch, an afternoon drink beneath the shade of a stately century-old live oak tree, or a memorable dinner showcasing the city’s diverse culinary scene. Put simply, there’s plenty to eat and drink in the Heights. Here’s where to start.
This list has been updated to rotate in Agnes and Sherman, Camaraderie, and Ginger Mule, and to rotate out Puebla’s Mexican Kitchen, Blue Tuba, and Eight Row Flint, and to remove Vuji Cafe.
