When it comes to tacos, Austin is spoiled for choice — and lucky for us, because few foods work harder. Tacos are equally suited to an on-the-go breakfast, a quick lunch, a hearty afternoon snack, and essential late-night sustenance. With so many excellent
options across the city, narrowing them down for this guide was no small feat. The standouts span gas station parking lots, Michelin-recognized restaurants, and Hidalgo-style pits beyond the city limits.
Eater skipped chains like Torchy’s Tacos and Tacodeli in favor of locally-owned taquerias and food trucks dedicated to what is arguably Austin’s favorite food group. We also focused on places where tacos are the main event, rather than restaurants or trucks that offer one or two options. For the best overall Mexican restaurants in Austin, head here.
New this update: Taqueria de Diez, Taqueria Fenix, El Grandpa Mexican BBQ, Granny’s Tacos, Taco Flats, Tacos El Charly, Taqueria Jessica, Taqueria el Picante, and Tortilleria Rio Grande join the list.
In this edition, Taco Joint, Flavia’s Kitchen, El Primo, Trippy Tacos, Suerte, and La Flor rotate off of the list.
