Just in time for the World Cup, the hit-making team behind Taqueria Ramirez and Carnitas Ramirez — chef Giovanni Cervantes and Tania Apolinar — is opening a soccer bar in Greenpoint this weekend. Socceria is opening at 46 Norman Avenue, near Guernsey Street. on Saturday, May 30 (taking over the former Nura space).
Socceria’s first day will have limited service while the bar screens the Champions League Final game between Paris Saint-Germain and Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s favorite soccer team, Arsenal, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. RSVPs are required, and Apolinar tells us they’re full already. (Mamdani recently shared that Taqueria Ramirez is his favorite taco joint in NYC, so maybe he’ll make an appearance?)
After this soccer match, Socceria will reopen
again for limited service on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7. Future dates will be announced later. During the World Cup (from Thursday, June 11, through Sunday, July 19), Socceria’s hours will be from noon to midnight.
Apolinar shares that Socceria will serve breakfast items like chilaquiles, huevos estrellados con hoja santo, huevos ahogados en chile pasilla, and what she deems the “ultimate huevos rancheros.” For garnachas, there’s quesadillas de queso Oaxaca, tinga de pollo, chorizo verde, chicharrón prensado, and tlacoyo de nopales. Naturally, there will be a lot of international beers.
For the daily happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m., the bar will serve the epic Ramirez burger, al pastor chicken wings, and the street hot dog.
Cerantes and Apolinar are working on opening a West Village Mexican seafood bar, El Camaron Peludo, and a second Taqueria Ramirez with a focus on charcoal grilling in Carroll Gardens. Both are set to open sometime this summer.
Cervantes and Apolinar opened Taqueria Ramirez in Greenpoint in 2021, followed by Carnitas Ramirez in the East Village in 2024. Cervantes is a finalist in the James Beard Awards’ Best Chef: New York State category this year; winners will be announced on Tuesday, June 15.
