What is the story about?
Tuberculosis,
or TB, is often associated with the lungs, but it can also affect other parts of your body, including the eyes. A new study has raised concern that eye tuberculosis (ocular TB) may continue to cause inflammation even after successful treatment, highlighting the need for long-term monitoring and awareness. The findings come from research conducted by teams at LV Prasad Eye Institute, Cole Eye Institute, Cleveland, and ABO Eye Institute, Nagpur. The study focused on tubercular serpiginous-like choroiditis (TB-SLC), a form of eye TB that affects the back of the eye and can damage the retina, potentially leading to vision loss. Also read: What Does ‘Incapacitated’ Mean? What is eye tuberculosis?
Eye TB, or ocular tuberculosis, occurs when Mycobacterium tuberculosis infects or triggers inflammation in the eye. It may not always involve active bacteria in the eye itself; in many cases, it is an immune response to TB infection elsewhere in the body. Common forms of ocular TB include uveitis, a condition where the middle layer of the eye becomes inflamed. If left untreated, it can lead to complications such as blurred vision, retinal damage, or even permanent vision loss.Study findings say inflammation may persist
According to the research, patients treated for TB may continue to experience chronic eye inflammation even after the infection is considered cured. This means that while the bacteria may be eliminated, the body’s immune system can remain active, continuing to cause damage. Experts suggest that this persistent inflammation could be due to an overactive immune response or residual damage caused during the infection phase. In some cases, symptoms may flare up months or even years after completing TB treatment.Symptoms you should watch for
Eye TB symptoms can be subtle and are often mistaken for other eye conditions. Key signs include:- Redness and irritation in the eyes
- Blurred or reduced vision
- Eye pain or sensitivity to light
- Floaters or small spots drifting in vision
- Excessive tearing
