However, among all these tests, thalassemia screening remains one of the most important. According to medical experts, a simple blood test can identify whether a person carries the thalassemia gene. Carriers often appear completely healthy and may never experience symptoms, making the condition difficult to detect without testing. What is thalassemia?

People who carry a single thalassemia gene are known as carriers or individuals with thalassemia trait. They usually lead normal lives and may never realize they carry the gene. If both prospective parents carry the thalassemia trait, each pregnancy has a quarter chance of resulting in a child with thalassemia major, the most severe form of the disease.
