What is the story about?
A
winter cough is not just uncomfortable but also nagging – it just refuses to go away. Mostly dry, irritating, and persistent – coughing in cold weather disrupts sleep, conversations, and daily life. Even though it is mostly deemed harmless and self-limiting, many times it also signals an underlying condition that needs medical attention. Understanding the difference is key.
Why is a winter cough common?
According to doctors, winter is a perfect time for airway irritation. One of the most common triggers is dry air. “Cold outdoor air combined with indoor heating strips moisture from the airways, leaving the throat dry and scratchy and making you more prone to coughing,” Dr Jai Mullerpattan, consultant pulmonologist, P D Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre, told Times Now. Another major reason is the viral infections – as seasonal colds and flu peak during winter, and even after the infection clears, inflammation in the airways can persist. This leads to a post-infectious cough that may last for weeks. Sudden exposure to cold air can also cause respiratory sensitivity, especially in people with asthma or hyperreactive airways. “Simply stepping out early in the morning or late at night can trigger bouts of coughing,” said Dr Mullerpattan. A few other common causes for winter coughs include:- Dry air and heating
- Respiratory Sensitivity, which happens due to sudden exposure to cold air, triggers a cough
- Indoor allergens like dust mites, pet dander, and mould in poorly ventilated, heated homes can induce cough
- Post-infection, coughs may linger for weeks after a viral infection due to residual inflammation.
Effective remedies that help
According to experts, for most people, winter coughs improve with simple measures aimed at soothing the airways and reducing irritation:Stay hydrated
It is important to drink plenty of fluids even in winter as, apart from preventing dehydration, it helps keep the throat moist and thins mucus.Increase indoor humidity
A cold-mist humidifier or vaporizer can add moisture to dry indoor air.Steam inhalation
Breathing in steam from a hot shower or bowl of warm water can ease throat and airway irritation.Use soothing agents
Honey, throat lozenges, and warm herbal teas such as ginger or tulsi can calm a sore throat and suppress a cough.Prevent further irritation
Wash hands frequently, reduce exposure to allergens, and keep rooms well-ventilated even during colder days. For most healthy individuals, these measures are enough, and the cough gradually settles on its own.
