Well-known fashion influencer Dawn Roth has been diagnosed with cancer, she told her Instagram followers. The 50-year-old body positive content creator posted the update about her health, mentioning that her cancer has become metastatic, spread beyond the spot to the colon, lungs, and even the abdomen. “I don’t know what to write, so I’ll just put the facts here. I have cancer,” she wrote on the social media sites along with a series of selfies. “It’s not localized. It’s already in my colon, lungs, and abdomen.” Roth said her diagnosis came after she went for a routine CT scan, after which her doctors found things that were “all unexpected”. “It's been since Sunday afternoon. I am waiting for my pathology on the biopsies. They did a biopsy of my liver.
They did a biopsy of part of my colon,” Roth said. “They will send it to oncology and assign me a care team, and I will know what the next steps are.” While Roth did not disclose what form of cancer she had, she informed that her treatment had started.

What is a metastatic cancer?
Metastatic cancer or metastasis happens when the cancer spreads beyond the place where it started to other areas of your body. Most cancers have the potential to metastasize, but if they do, it depends on many factors, such as the type, size, and location of the primary tumour. According to the Cleveland Clinic, metastases occur in three ways.- Cancer cells grow directly into the tissue surrounding the primary tumour
- Travel through your bloodstream to distant locations like other organs or your bones
- Move through your lymphatic system to nearby or distant lymph nodes.
Where does cancer metastasise first?
Where cancer spreads during metastasis depends on the location of the primary or original tumour. A few of the most common sites of metastases are the adrenal glands, bones, brain, liver, lungs, lymph nodes, and peritoneum.Signs and symptoms of metastatic cancer
While metastasis does not always cause symptoms, a few general signs would include:- Extreme fatigue
- Night sweats
- Unexplained weight loss
- Bloating and a swollen belly, which makes you have a low appetite
- Jaundice and yellowing of the eyes
- Bone pain and fractures
- Dizziness, headaches, and seizures
- Breathlessness
What causes metastasis?
Metastasis can happen when cancer cells break off from the original tumour and spread to other parts of your body. These cancer cells can travel through your bloodstream or lymph vessels. Many factors can trigger metastasis, such as:- A weakened immune system
- Hypoxia, which causes a lack of oxygen in your tissues
- Lactic acidosis, which causes a buildup of lactic acid in your blood
- Autophagy, which is a kind of cell death
