What is the story about?
Could
a common sleep problem raise your chances of developing Parkinson’s disease years later? A major new study suggests the answer may be yes, especially if the condition goes untreated.Researchers have found a strong link between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and a higher risk of Parkinson’s. People who treated their sleep apnea early using a CPAP machine had a much lower chance of developing the disease. The findings have put a spotlight on just how important healthy sleep really is for the brain.
New Study Links Sleep Apnea To Parkinson's Disease
The research, published in JAMA Neurology, looked at more than 11 million medical records of U.S. veterans over two decades. It found that people with untreated OSA were almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson’s later in life compared to those without the disorder. But there was also good news. Those who started CPAP therapy within two years of their sleep apnea diagnosis had a much lower risk. This suggests that treating OSA doesn’t just improve sleep but might also protect the brain. It is important to note that the study doesn’t prove that sleep apnea causes Parkinson’s, but the connection is strong enough that doctors are urging people not to ignore sleep-related symptoms. What Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
OSA happens when the airway repeatedly collapses during sleep. Because your breathing keeps stopping and starting, your oxygen levels also drop, sometimes hundreds of times a night. This causes:- Loud snoring
- Gasping or choking during the night
- Frequent wake-ups
- Poor-quality sleep
What Is Parkinson’s disease: Symptoms
Parkinson’s is a progressive brain disorder that affects movement. It happens when the brain loses nerve cells that produce dopamine, the chemical that helps coordinate smooth movement. It starts gradually with symptoms like:- Tremors
- Stiffness
- Slowed movement
- Balance problems
