Encephalitis Outbreak in Rajasthan: 5 Children Dead, Health Alert Issued

suspected encephalitis outbreak in Rajasthan has triggered alarm after five young children died under mysterious circumstances in the Salumbar district. Health authorities have launched an intensive survey and emergency response in affected villages, as officials race to identify the cause and prevent further fatalities. The deaths were reported from Ghata and Lalpura villages in the Lasadiya block of Salumbar. News reports say the victims, aged between two and four years, developed similar symptoms before their deaths, raising concerns about a possible viral infection spreading in the region.

Symptoms like that of viral encephalitis

According to district officials, the children experienced vomiting, unconsciousness, and altered sensorium - classic warning signs associated with Encephalitis. This condition involves inflammation of the brain, often caused by viral infections, and can progress rapidly, especially in children. Salumbar District Collector Muhammad Junaid told media persons that medical experts suspect viral encephalitis, though confirmation is still pending. A team from Udaipur Medical College has conducted preliminary assessments, while samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology for definitive testing.

The Chandipura virus is also suspected

One of the leading concerns is a possible link to the Chandipura virus – another dangerous virus which causes outbreaks of encephalitis in many parts of India. The virus is typically transmitted by sandflies and has previously affected children in rural regions. While officials have not confirmed its presence, the mention of Chandipura has heightened vigilance due to its rapid progression and high fatality rate in pediatric cases.

Health department on high alert

To tackle the situation, the Rajasthan Health Department says it has initiated door-to-door surveys, medical screenings, and awareness drives in the affected villages. Rapid response teams are monitoring children for early symptoms and ensuring immediate medical intervention where necessary. Local authorities are also focusing on vector control measures, sanitation, and public awareness to reduce the risk of transmission.
