Japanese people are known across the world not just for their longevity but also for their healthy lifestyles. Apart from eating healthy and taking care of their physical fitness, the Japanese also believe in the principles of positivity – all of which are showcased in popular concepts like Ikigai, Shinrin Yoku, and Hara-Hachi Bu – which help create an overall balance of body and mind. And so, to take care of your body – specifically your brain health – to reduce the risk of fatal strokes, a tried-and-tested Japanese formula – of Ashi Yu, also known as foot bath, is of extreme importance. The practice, which includes soaking your feet in warm water for around 20 minutes daily, helps provide relaxation and comfort – crucial for your cardiovascular
and brain health.
What is Ashi Yu?
Ashi Yu significantly reduces the risk of stroke as it helps improve blood circulation, lowers blood pressure levels, and thereby reduces heightened stress. However, experts believe it is a complementary approach and should not replace professional medical care. According to experts, in Japan, Ashi Yu is performed either in public baths, ryokans, or even at home. You need to take warm water - between 38 and 42 degrees Celsius, which gently stimulates the extensive network of nerves and blood vessels in the feet. This stimulation enhances blood circulation, warms the body naturally, and has cascading benefits for overall heart health. The Japanese believe that the bottoms of your feet affect the wellness of other areas of your body, as the feet contain over 7,000 nerve endings known as reflexes, which correspond to every organ and system within your body. These reflex points ultimately stimulate the nervous system and open energy pathways that may be blocked or congested. How does Ashi Yu improve blood circulation?
Slow blood circulation is extremely common – especially among older people. However, it is important to regulate it for the proper working of your organs, along with the brain, to function in optimal capacity, or else it can lead to the formation of blood clots, which cause stroke. Ashi Yu foot baths make the blood move freely from the extremities toward the heart, improving oxygen delivery and reducing vascular strain. According to a study published in the Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medical Research, at least 100 hypertensive participants were made to regularly soak their feet in warm water for 15 minutes daily for two weeks. After the stipulated time, the results showed a significant drop in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, apart from a reduction in blood pressure levels, the study reported improvements in heart rate variability — a measure of balance in the autonomic nervous system. Warm footbaths have also been instrumental in decreasing the stress response of the body and enhancing parasympathetic activity, often referred to as the “rest-and-digest” mode, which helps in maintaining long-term cardiovascular health. How to easily do Ashi Yu at home?
To easily practice Ashi Yu, you need just a basin or foot tub and warm water:- Fill a basin with water at a temperature of 38 to 42 degrees Celsius.
- Sit in a comfortable position and soak your feet for 15 to 20 minutes.
- You can simultaneously relax by reading a book, sipping your favourite beverage, or even practicing breathing.
- After you are done, make sure to dry your feet thoroughly and rest for a few minutes.
