World Environment Day 2026: Why Climate Change Is Emerging As A Major Public Health Threat

Every year on June 5, the world observes World Environment Day. The theme for 2026, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future," highlights the urgent need to address environmental challenges that threaten both the planet and human health. Under the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement, nations agreed to limit long-term global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels in an effort to avoid dangerous climate extremes. However, a recent report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns that there is a 91 per cent chance that global average temperatures will exceed 1.5°C above the 1850–1900 baseline for at least one year between 2026 and 2030. While temporary monthly or annual breaches of the 1.5°C threshold do not mean the Paris Agreement's

temperature goal has been permanently missed, the effects of a warming planet are becoming increasingly evident. Rising sea levels, devastating wildfires, prolonged heatwaves, and melting glaciers are among the warning signs being observed across the globe. On World Environment Day 2026, global public health experts told Times Now that climate change is rapidly emerging as a major public health threat. Beyond its environmental consequences, it is contributing to a growing global disease burden and creating conditions that facilitate the spread of infectious diseases worldwide.

Climate Change: A Public Health Emergency

Climate change is no longer just an environmental issue—it is increasingly becoming a public health emergency.According to Dr. Sabine Kapasi, a UN advisor, rising temperatures, deteriorating air quality and shifting weather patterns are already affecting the health of millions worldwide.“Longer and more intense heatwaves are leading to a rise in heat-related illnesses. Air pollution continues to worsen respiratory diseases, while changing weather conditions are threatening food security and nutrition in many regions,” she said.In India, some of the most vulnerable groups include children, pregnant women and communities living in flood- and drought-prone areas. Women often face additional challenges linked to water access and sanitation. Although India has reduced malaria cases by nearly 80 per cent since 2015, climate change is creating new health threats that could place additional pressure on healthcare systems.

Climate Change Fueling Infectious Diseases

Experts warn that changing climatic conditions are creating a more favourable environment for the spread of infectious diseases.Dr. Kapasi explained that warmer temperatures and altered rainfall patterns are enabling mosquitoes to breed more easily and remain active for longer periods, increasing the risk of disease transmission.Extreme weather events such as floods further worsen the situation by contaminating drinking water supplies, damaging sanitation infrastructure and disrupting healthcare services. Climate-related displacement can also force people into overcrowded shelters, increasing the risk of infections such as cholera, leptospirosis and tuberculosis.“Recent climate-related disasters in South Asia and Africa have demonstrated how quickly an environmental crisis can evolve into a public health emergency,” she said.Mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue, malaria and chikungunya, are becoming a growing concern worldwide. Cases are increasingly being reported in regions where these illnesses were once rare.Several European countries, including Italy, France and Spain, have recorded a rise in locally transmitted dengue and chikungunya infections over the past decade. In the United States, locally acquired malaria cases were recently detected in Florida and Texas for the first time in nearly two decades.India is also witnessing an increase in dengue activity, with outbreaks becoming a recurring feature during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Experts estimate that dengue cases could reach around 278,000 in 2025, compared with approximately 230,000 the previous year. Rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns are believed to be helping disease-carrying mosquitoes expand their range and survive longer.

Climate Change Increasing Chronic Diseases

In India, both communicable and non-communicable diseases are being affected, with vulnerable populations facing the greatest burden,” he said.Research shows that people living with chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes are particularly susceptible to extreme heat, highlighting the growing connection between climate change and non-communicable diseases.Dr. Praveen noted that changes in temperature, humidity and rainfall can influence disease transmission while also affecting water quality, food systems and interactions between humans, animals and disease-carrying vectors.“These changes can make disease outbreaks more frequent, more widespread and harder to predict,” he said.

How to Safeguard Against Climate-Related Health Risks

Experts say awareness and preparedness are essential as climate change continues to reshape global disease patterns.People are advised to stay informed about weather forecasts, remain hydrated, avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during extreme heat and take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites.Those living with chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease should ensure they have an adequate supply of medications and seek medical advice during prolonged periods of extreme heat.To reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, households should eliminate stagnant water from containers such as buckets, coolers and flower pots, where mosquitoes commonly breed. The use of repellents, mosquito nets and protective clothing can provide additional protection.Dr. Kapasi also stressed the importance of food and water safety, particularly after heavy rainfall or flooding. Safe drinking water, proper food storage and good hygiene practices can significantly reduce the risk of infections. Individuals with existing health conditions should keep essential medicines readily available during extreme weather events.
