Bloating
is among the most common digestive issues, but it is attributed to being foo related. However, according to UK-based Dr Sami Kader, that is not entirely true. Responding to a patient’s concern, he explained that bloating can stem from multiple causes - many of which have nothing to do with what you eat. According to Dr. Kader, a patient of his - a woman who had eliminated dairy, sugar, and gluten from her diet still experienced persistent bloating. What causes bloating?
Dr. Kader explains that bloating typically occurs due to two main reasons: gas buildup or increased pressure and fluid in the gut. From there, he outlines five key causes:Constipation
One of the most overlooked causes of bloating is constipation. “That is because if you are not emptying your bowels regularly, pressure will build up,” said Dr. Kader. When bowel movements are irregular, waste builds up in the digestive system, leading to pressure and discomfort. This can make your stomach feel swollen and tight.Gas from fermentation
Certain foods - especially carbohydrates- are broken down by gut bacteria, producing gases like hydrogen and methane. This process, known as fermentation, can cause bloating. Foods like beans, onions, fizzy drinks, sugar, and alcohol are common triggers. Methane, in particular, can slow digestion and worsen symptoms.Food intolerances
While bloating isn’t always about diet, food intolerances still play a role. Conditions like lactose intolerance or sensitivity to high-FODMAP foods can make digestion difficult. This leads to gas, discomfort, and abdominal swelling after eating items like bread, milk, pasta, or certain fruits.Swallowing air
A surprising non-diet cause of bloating is swallowing excess air. This can happen if you eat too quickly, talk while eating, chew gum, use a straw, vape, or drink carbonated beverages. The trapped air builds up in the stomach, causing discomfort.Hormonal changes
Hormones also play a significant role in digestion. "That includes stress hormones like cortisol, thyroid hormones, estrogen, progesterone - it’s quite a big topic,” said Dr. Kader. Stress hormones like cortisol, as well as estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid hormones, can affect gut function. Hormonal fluctuations may slow digestion, increase sensitivity, and lead to bloating.Can cancer cause bloating?
In a few rare cases, persistent bloating can also signal serious conditions like Ovarian Cancer. Symptoms to watch for include:- A constantly swollen abdomen
- Pelvic pain
- Loss of appetite
- Frequent urination
- Unexplained weight loss

- Back pain
- Feeling extremely tired all the time
- Vomiting blood
- Difficulty breathing
