What is the story about?
A
tragic case from Gwalior has put a spotlight on a critical public health issue: confusing vaccines can cost lives. A 36-year-old man reportedly died after receiving a tetanus shot instead of the life-saving rabies vaccine following a dog bite. Weeks later, news reports say Raju Khushwaha developed classic rabies symptoms – hydrophobia, also known as fear of water, and worsening neurological signs. Family says Raju was admitted to the hospital when his condition worsened, after which he succumbed to rabies. This is the seventh rabies death in Gwalior in the last three to four months.
What is rabies?
Rabies is a vaccine-preventable viral disease that affects the central nervous system. According to the World Health Organization, once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. The virus spreads through the saliva of infected animals, most commonly dogs and monkeys, via bites, scratches, or contact with open wounds. In India, a significant number of cases are linked to stray dog bites, with children being particularly vulnerable. Rabies has a silent incubation period that can last days to weeks. During this time, early intervention can prevent the virus from reaching the brain. Once neurological symptoms begin, like agitation, confusion, or difficulty swallowing, treatment options become extremely limited. Also read: At 76, Meryl Streep Chooses Swimming Over Gym - Here’s WhyHow does the rabies vaccine work?
According to doctors, the correct treatment after a dog bite is called post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). It includes immediate and thorough wound washing with soap and water, a full course of rabies vaccination, which is given in multiple doses over weeks, and Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) for severe exposures, providing instant protection. The vaccine helps the body build immunity before the virus can cause damage. Why is a tetanus shot not enough?
A tetanus shot is often given after injuries, but it does not protect against rabies. The reason lies in the biology of the diseases:- Tetanus is caused by bacteria (Clostridium tetani) that release toxins affecting muscles and nerves.
- Rabies is caused by a virus that directly attacks the brain and spinal cord.
Rising dog bites are a growing concern
The Gwalior incident is not isolated. Thousands of dog bite cases are reported in India every year, highlighting the urgent need for public awareness and proper medical protocols. Delays, misinformation, or incorrect treatment can lead to preventable deaths. If bitten or scratched by an animal, you must:- Wash the wound immediately with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes
- Seek urgent medical attention
- Ensure you receive the rabies vaccine as advised
- Ask your doctor about RIG if the wound is severe
- Take a tetanus shot only if recommended, but remember, it’s not a substitute
