Egg freezing was once considered something only celebrities and high-powered professionals spoke about openly. Today, however, it has become part of a much larger conversation around fertility, timing, relationships and reproductive choice. More women in their late 20s and 30s are now exploring the option - not necessarily because they are certain they want children later but because they want to keep that possibility open. At the same time, the process remains surrounded by confusion, anxiety and misinformation. How painful is it? What is the right age to freeze eggs? Does it guarantee pregnancy in the future? How many eggs are actually enough? And perhaps most importantly, is egg freezing a medical decision, an emotional one, or somewhere

At What Age Should I Get My Eggs Frozen? Is There An Age Limit? As per experts, the ideal time to freeze eggs is usually in the early 20s to late 20s - when both egg quality and quantity are at their best. "The best approach to egg freezing is a proactive one - not a reactive on," says Dr. Hrishikesh Pai, adding that healthier eggs improve future success rates. However, many women in their mid to late 30s also undergo the procedure successfully due to career plans, delayed marriage or health reasons. Dr. Sweta Gupta says egg retrieval can legally be done from 18 years onwards, while India’s ART law currently sets the upper age limit at 50 years.
How Much Does Egg Freezing Cost In India? And Is There Any Cost For Storage Of Eggs? The cost of egg freezing in India can vary depending on the clinic, city and the number of cycles required. As per experts, one cycle generally costs anywhere between ₹80,000 and ₹2.5 lakh. This usually includes hormonal injections, monitoring, egg retrieval and the vitrification or freezing process. The storage charges are separate and need to be paid annually. Dr. K S Kirthika says storage costs can range between ₹10,000 and ₹20,000 per year, while Dr. Richika Sahay Shukla notes that some centres may charge up to ₹40,000 annually depending on the facility and lab standards.
Are Loans Available For Such Medical Procedures? Will Insurance Cover The Cost?At present, most health insurance policies in India do not cover egg freezing if it is being done for elective or "social" reasons. However, experts say there can be exceptions in medically necessary cases, such as fertility preservation before cancer treatment. Dr. Richika Sahay Shukla says, "Currently, most standard health insurance policies in India do not cover egg freezing for elective purposes. However, if egg freezing is recommended as a medical necessity, some insurers do cover it."Many clinics are also now introducing EMI-based financing to make the procedure more manageable financially. Dr. Shukla says several fertility centres offer "0% EMI financing options," allowing patients to pay in monthly instalments without added interest. Third-party healthcare financing platforms are also increasingly covering fertility-related treatments and procedures.
How Many Eggs Should Ideally Be Frozen To Improve The Chances Of A Healthy Baby Later? There are no fixed number of eggs that can guarantee a future pregnancy, but experts say freezing more eggs can improve the chances of having a healthy baby later. According to Dr Sunita Tandulwadkar, fertility specialists generally recommend freezing around 15–20 mature eggs for women below 35 years of age. Women above 35 may need a higher number because both egg quality and quantity naturally decline with age.At the same time, experts caution against viewing egg freezing as a guaranteed backup plan. "Egg freezing does not guarantee a successful pregnancy," says Dr. Pallavi Vasal. Also Read:
Live Chat: Top 7 Doctors Answer Your Fruit Adulteration Questions With Facts, Not FearAre There Any Long-term Health Risks?Experts say egg freezing is generally considered safe and current research has not found strong evidence linking it to major long-term health risks. Studies so far have not shown a clear increase in conditions such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer or infertility due to the fertility medications used during the process. "There is no strong scientific evidence to suggest long-term health risks which are statistically significant," says Dr. Sunita Arora. Dr. Shanujeet Kaur adds that some women may experience short-term side effects such as bloating, mood changes or discomfort during hormone treatment. Rare complications like ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) can also occur, though experts say these are usually temporary and manageable.
What Is The Prep That I Need To Do For The Procedure?Dr. Sweta Gupta says that the medical fitness, for this procedure, is checked by detailed medical history and hormonal tests. This helps in getting a better understanding of the egg reserve. Also, pelvic scan and basic blood tests are viral markers.
Is The Process Painful? Will I Have To Be Hospitalised?Doctors say egg freezing is generally a well-tolerated procedure and does not usually require hospitalisation. Most women are able to continue their normal daily routines during the process, with only minor adjustments. According to Dr. Hrishikesh Pai, some women may experience temporary bloating, heaviness or mild hormonal changes during this phase, similar to symptoms experienced around menstruation. The egg retrieval itself is a short procedure that usually takes only 15–20 minutes. “It is performed either under mild sedation or under anesthesia, so there is no pain,” says Dr. Pai. Dr. K S Kirthika also notes that the retrieval is done under anesthesia and does not require inpatient admission.
Does Egg Freezing Impact Future Fertility Or Natural Pregnancy Chances?Experts say egg freezing does not usually reduce future fertility or affect a woman's ability to conceive naturally later. According to Dr. Sunita Tandulwadkar, the procedure involves retrieving eggs that the body would naturally lose during that menstrual cycle anyway, meaning ovarian function continues normally afterward. Many women are still able to get pregnant naturally even after freezing their eggs. However, doctors caution that egg freezing should not be viewed as a guaranteed "insurance policy." Fertility continues to be influenced by age, overall health and other medical factors over time.
What Is The Recovery Time?Recovery after egg retrieval is usually quick, and most women are able to resume normal activities within one to three days. According to Dr. Shanujeet Kaur, mild cramping, bloating, spotting or fatigue are common for a short period after the procedure because the ovaries may still be slightly enlarged.Doctors generally advise resting on the day of the retrieval and avoiding strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for a few days. Staying hydrated and taking prescribed medication can also help ease recovery.Dr. Sunita Arora adds that patients are usually discharged "within a few hours after the procedure" unless they have another medical condition that requires monitoring. Experts say severe pain, fever or heavy bleeding should be reported to a doctor immediately.
Are There Any Diet Restrictions? There are usually no strict diet restrictions during the egg freezing process but eating a balanced and nutritious diet is strongly recommended. Foods rich in protein, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains can support overall health and recovery during treatment. Doctors also advise staying well-hydrated, especially during ovarian stimulation. Some women may experience bloating during this phase, so lighter meals and cutting down on salty or highly processed foods may help improve comfort.
