What's Happening?
The Augusta Lynx, the newest member of the ECHL, unveiled their team name and logo at an event held at the Augusta Marriott Convention Center. The identity of the team was developed with significant community involvement, including fan submissions during
a public naming process. The logo, designed by The Barn Creative, incorporates elements that represent the Augusta region. The team is co-owned by Tim Tebow, founder of the Tim Tebow Foundation and former NFL quarterback, and David Hodges, a principal at Family Office and co-owner of the Tahoe Knight Monsters. The Augusta Lynx will be managed by Zawyer Sports & Entertainment and are set to begin play in the 2027-2028 season at the new Augusta Arena, a 10,500-seat venue currently under construction. The arena will be managed by Oak View Group, which operates several NHL venues.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the Augusta Lynx to the ECHL marks a significant expansion of professional hockey in the Southeast United States. This development is expected to boost local economic activity through increased tourism and job creation associated with the new arena and team operations. The involvement of high-profile figures like Tim Tebow brings additional attention and potential investment to the region. The team's establishment also reflects the strategic growth of the ECHL, enhancing its presence in the Southeast and potentially increasing the league's fan base. The new arena will not only host hockey games but also serve as a multi-purpose venue, further contributing to Augusta's cultural and economic landscape.
What's Next?
In the lead-up to their inaugural season, the Augusta Lynx will announce their NHL and AHL affiliations and hire a head coach. Additional announcements, including the unveiling of the team's jersey and mascot, are expected in the coming months. The construction of the Augusta Arena is ongoing, with completion anticipated before the start of the 2027-2028 season. The arena's management by Oak View Group suggests a focus on high-quality facilities and services, which could attract other events and further integrate the venue into the community's social fabric.
