What's Happening?
Benoit Richer, the game director for the upcoming Assassin's Creed title, Codename Hexe, has left Ubisoft to co-found a new independent studio, Servo Games, in Quebec. Richer announced his departure on LinkedIn, marking him as the third major team member
to exit the Codename Hexe project. His departure follows that of Marc-Alexis Côté, the former franchise lead, who left in October and subsequently filed a lawsuit against Ubisoft for 'constructive dismissal' after the Assassin's Creed brand was transferred to Tencent-backed Vantage Studios. Additionally, Clint Hocking, the creative director, left Ubisoft in February as part of the company's restructuring plan. Jean Guesdon, head of content for the Assassin's Creed brand, has been appointed as the new creative director for Codename Hexe.
Why It's Important?
The departure of key figures from the Codename Hexe project highlights potential instability within Ubisoft's leadership and project management. This could impact the development timeline and quality of the game, which is a significant part of Ubisoft's portfolio. The lawsuit filed by Marc-Alexis Côté also suggests possible internal conflicts and dissatisfaction among high-level staff, which could affect employee morale and retention. As Ubisoft navigates these changes, the company's ability to maintain its competitive edge in the gaming industry may be challenged, especially with the involvement of Tencent-backed Vantage Studios in the Assassin's Creed brand.
What's Next?
With Jean Guesdon stepping in as the new creative director, Ubisoft will need to stabilize the Codename Hexe project and ensure continuity in its development. The company may also need to address any underlying issues that led to the departures and lawsuit to prevent further disruptions. Stakeholders, including investors and fans, will be closely watching how Ubisoft manages these transitions and whether it can deliver on its promises for the Assassin's Creed franchise.
