What's Happening?
Giuseppe Chinè, the Federal Football Prosecutor, has issued a statement addressing recent allegations concerning Gianluca Rocchi, the referees’ appointing official for Serie A and Serie B. The allegations involve an alleged external intervention in the VAR
room during a match between Udinese and Parma. Chinè clarified that these reports are unfounded and emphasized the integrity of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office. He confirmed that a complaint was received from assistant referee Domenico Rocca on May 21, 2025, which led to an immediate sports investigation. The investigation involved interviewing all relevant parties, and no disciplinary actions were found necessary against any members of the Italian Referees Association (AIA). The Federal Prosecutor’s Office proposed dismissing the disciplinary proceedings, a decision supported by the General Sports Prosecutor’s Office at CONI.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it underscores the importance of transparency and integrity in sports officiating, particularly in high-stakes leagues like Serie A and Serie B. The allegations, if proven true, could have undermined the credibility of the refereeing process and affected the outcomes of matches. By addressing these claims promptly and transparently, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office aims to maintain trust in the sports justice system. The outcome of this investigation also highlights the rigorous standards and procedures in place to ensure fair play and accountability in sports, which are crucial for maintaining the integrity of the game and the confidence of fans and stakeholders.
What's Next?
Chinè has indicated that he is in contact with the Milan Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding any new evidence that may arise from their criminal investigation. Should new, decisive evidence come to light, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office is prepared to reopen the sports investigation. This proactive approach ensures that any potential misconduct is thoroughly examined and addressed, reinforcing the commitment to uphold the standards of sports justice. Stakeholders in the sports community, including teams, players, and fans, will be closely monitoring the situation for any further developments.
