What's Happening?
First Quantum Minerals (FQM) is expanding its fleet of battery-electric trucks at the Kansanshi copper and gold mine in Zambia. The company plans to have the first commercial model of the Hitachi EH 4000 AC3 battery-electric truck operational by March
2028. These trucks use a battery electric drivetrain and a trolley assist system, which charges the battery on specific haul road sections. The system allows trucks to move faster and more efficiently. FQM currently has 10 km of trolley lines at Kansanshi and plans to add more over the next five years. The initiative is part of FQM's efforts to adopt renewable energy and low-emissions technology.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of battery-electric trucks at FQM's Kansanshi mine represents a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions in the mining industry. By adopting renewable energy technologies, FQM is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable mining practices. This move aligns with global efforts to reduce the environmental impact of mining operations and transition to cleaner energy sources. The success of this initiative could encourage other mining companies to adopt similar technologies, contributing to broader industry-wide sustainability goals.
What's Next?
FQM plans to expand its fleet of trolley-enabled haul trucks from 47 to over 80. The company will continue to develop its trolley line infrastructure to support the increased number of electric trucks. As FQM progresses with this initiative, it may explore further collaborations with technology partners to enhance its renewable energy capabilities. The success of this project could lead to additional investments in sustainable mining technologies and practices.
