What's Happening?
The Motor City Cruise, an NBA G-League team, is set to host a Black Excellence Game on January 22, celebrating Black culture and achievement. The event will feature a game against the Grand Rapids Gold,
the Denver Nuggets’ affiliate. The celebration aims to unify history, inspiration, and pride for the future. Pre-game activities include a college fair led by Pistons’ Toheeb Bello, a Black-owned business market with Detroit vendors, and engagement with community and cultural organizations like the Divine 9 and the Wright Museum. The arena will feature drumline shows, an interactive 'I Have a Dream' mural, and displays spotlighting organizations supporting Black culture. The event will also include performances of Motown, jazz, and hip-hop music, and food from local Black-owned restaurants. During the game, a video featuring local employees and HBCU alumni will reflect on Black excellence, and halftime will showcase performances by drumlines and step squads.
