What's Happening?
The British Film Institute's (BFI) Innovation Challenge Fund has allocated £350,000 to Goldsmiths, University of London, for a research project titled ACES: AI, Carbon, Equity, Skills. This initiative aims to explore the workforce impacts of artificial
intelligence (AI) and how convergent technologies affect environmental sustainability, equity, diversity, and inclusion within the film, TV, and digital entertainment industries. The project will involve a UK-wide program of workshops and the development of new toolkits and resources to ensure equitable and environmentally responsible technology adoption. Partners in this project include the University of Edinburgh, Loughborough University, and not-for-profits like Julie’s Bicycle and Sunderland Software City.
Why It's Important?
The ACES project is significant as it addresses the rapid evolution of technology in the creative industries, focusing on ensuring that AI and other technologies are adopted in ways that promote equity and sustainability. By centering on these values, the project aims to help the industry build a future-ready creative ecosystem. This initiative could set a precedent for how industries approach technological advancements, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and environmental responsibility. The insights and tools developed through this project could influence policy and practice across the creative sectors, potentially leading to more sustainable and equitable industry standards.
