Jindal Steel Ltd has made significant strides in energy self-reliance and sustainable steel production by pioneering the use of coal gasification in India. The company has established the country's first coal gasification-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI)
plant, utilizing syngas for iron-making. This innovation addresses the shortages of natural gas, LPG, and propane by deploying syngas in galvanizing and color coating line furnaces, marking a first in the steel industry. Jindal Steel has also introduced syngas injection into its blast furnace, reducing reliance on imported coking coal and lowering carbon emissions per tonne of steel. These advancements align with the Indian government's National Coal Gasification Mission, which aims to accelerate the adoption of coal gasification technologies.
