What's Happening?
Yoshihisa Kishimoto, the influential creator behind the Kunio-kun and Double Dragon video game franchises, has passed away at the age of 64. His son, Ryūbō, confirmed the news on Facebook, expressing gratitude for the support his father received throughout
his life. Kishimoto began his career in the early 1980s at Data East, working on LaserDisc arcade games such as Cobra Command and Road Blaster. However, his most significant contributions came during his time at Technos Japan, where he designed Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun, known in the West as Renegade. This game was a seminal release in the beat 'em up genre, drawing from Kishimoto's personal experiences. His next major project, Double Dragon, became one of the most famous arcade games, leading to numerous sequels and adaptations, including a Hollywood movie. After leaving Technos, Kishimoto continued to work in the industry, eventually founding Plophet Co., Ltd. in 2010.
Why It's Important?
Kishimoto's work has had a lasting impact on the video game industry, particularly in the beat 'em up genre. Double Dragon, in particular, set a standard for cooperative gameplay and has influenced countless games that followed. The franchise's success also demonstrated the potential for video games to expand into other media, such as films and merchandise, paving the way for future cross-media franchises. Kishimoto's passing marks the end of an era for fans of classic arcade games, but his legacy continues to inspire game developers and players worldwide.
