What's Happening?
The National Wealth Fund has committed nearly £600 million to Rolls-Royce's Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project, marking its second investment in nuclear energy following the Sizewell C project. This investment aims to support the development of SMRs
in the UK, which are designed to provide stable, low-carbon electricity. Each SMR unit is expected to generate 470 megawatts, enough to power around one million homes. The funding is expected to support approximately 1,000 jobs and improve investor confidence in domestic nuclear technology.
Why It's Important?
This investment is significant as it highlights the UK's commitment to clean energy and energy security. By supporting the development of SMRs, the UK aims to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and enhance its energy independence. The investment is expected to attract additional private capital into the sector, boosting the UK's nuclear technology capabilities and supporting export opportunities. The creation of jobs and the potential for economic growth further underscore the importance of this investment in the UK's clean energy mission.
What's Next?
Rolls-Royce SMR will begin work on three reactors immediately, with plans for up to six further units in Czechia. The loan funding will cover up to 50% of the company's design activities and other costs. The repayment of the loan is expected through the deployment of reactor units worldwide or a refinancing event. The success of this project could pave the way for further investments in nuclear energy and strengthen the UK's position in the global energy market.
