What's Happening?
Two of Keith Haring's iconic art cars are being showcased in New York City for the first time. The exhibition, titled 'Keith Haring: In the Street,' will display Haring's 1963 Buick Special and a Land Rover Series III from the 1983 Montreux Jazz Festival.
The event is hosted at the CART Department gallery, Free Parking, from April 10 to 19. This exhibition coincides with the release of the new book 'Keith Haring in 3D' by Larry Warsh and Glenn Adamson. The gallery, located in a West Village carriage house, will also feature original works and photographs, along with events and appearances by artists and writers connected to Haring. The exhibition aims to provide a rare view of Haring's three-dimensional work and will include discussions and panels about 1980s downtown New York City culture.
Why It's Important?
The exhibition of Keith Haring's art cars in New York City is significant as it offers a unique perspective on the artist's work, showcasing his contributions to street art and culture. Haring's art is celebrated for its vibrant and socially conscious themes, and this exhibition provides an opportunity for art enthusiasts and the general public to engage with his work in a new format. The event also highlights the cultural impact of Haring's art during the 1980s, a period marked by significant social and political changes. By bringing these iconic pieces to New York, the exhibition reinforces Haring's legacy and influence in the art world, while also promoting discussions on the historical context of his work.
What's Next?
Following the exhibition in New York, 'Keith Haring: In the Street' will be part of a larger exhibition at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, opening in June. This expansion will allow a broader audience to experience Haring's work and further explore his artistic contributions. The ongoing interest in Haring's art suggests continued opportunities for exhibitions and discussions that delve into his impact on contemporary art and culture.
