What's Happening?
Extell Development has announced plans to demolish a section of Hell's Kitchen to construct a new venue that will host a hologram show featuring the iconic Swedish pop band ABBA. The project involves razing a series of low-rise buildings, including former
clubs and a lumberyard, located between 11th Avenue and West 45th and 46th Streets. The new venue will serve as the permanent home for 'ABBA Voyage,' a production that showcases holograms of the band members as they appeared in their prime. The show, which debuted in London in 2022, has been a significant success, selling 3.5 million tickets by November 2025. The venue is expected to be completed by 2028 and will accommodate 3,000 attendees. The construction is projected to create 638 jobs, with 196 full-time positions once operational.
Why It's Important?
The development of a new entertainment venue in Hell's Kitchen signifies a substantial investment in New York City's cultural and economic landscape. The project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities during and after construction, contributing to the local economy. The success of 'ABBA Voyage' in London suggests a strong potential for similar success in New York, attracting tourists and boosting the city's entertainment industry. This development also highlights the ongoing transformation and gentrification of Hell's Kitchen, a neighborhood historically known for its industrial and nightlife venues. The project reflects broader trends in urban redevelopment and the increasing use of technology in live entertainment.
What's Next?
As the project progresses, Extell Development will continue to navigate the complexities of urban redevelopment, including potential legal and financial challenges. The company has already faced opposition from previous property owners, which could resurface as construction begins. Additionally, the success of the venue will depend on the continued popularity of the ABBA hologram show and the ability to attract a diverse audience. The development may also prompt further investment in the area, potentially leading to additional projects and increased property values in Hell's Kitchen.
