What's Happening?
Vast, a Los Angeles-based space company, has secured a contract with NASA to send private astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) in the summer of 2027. This marks the first time Vast will conduct a private astronaut mission to the ISS. Previously, all private astronaut missions to the ISS were managed by Axiom Space. Vast's entry into this market signifies increased competition in the commercial spaceflight sector, particularly in the realm of private missions to the ISS.
Why It's Important?
The contract with NASA represents a significant achievement for Vast, highlighting the growing interest and investment in commercial spaceflight. As more companies enter the market, competition is likely to drive innovation and reduce costs, making space travel
more accessible. This development also aligns with NASA's strategy to foster a commercial economy in low Earth orbit, ensuring the continued use of the ISS and preparing for future private space stations.
What's Next?
NASA is expected to award additional contracts for its Commercial Low Earth Orbit Development (CLD) program, with at least two companies anticipated to receive contracts this year. As Vast prepares for its mission, it will need to demonstrate its capabilities in managing crewed missions to the ISS. The outcome of these contracts will shape the future landscape of commercial spaceflight and the role of private companies in space exploration.
