What's Happening?
The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) and Flavourtech are collaborating to support the production of no- and low-alcohol (NOLO) wines. This partnership is part of a broader initiative funded by the Cooperative Research Centres Projects (CRC-P)
program, aimed at improving the quality and competitiveness of Australian NOLO wines. The project involves the establishment of a trial-scale research facility at Adelaide University's Waite Campus, where researchers and commercial wine producers can conduct trials on small volumes of wine. The facility is equipped with Flavourtech's Spinning Cone Column (SCC) technology, which helps minimize thermal stress during the dealcoholisation process, preserving the wine's sensory characteristics.
Why It's Important?
The collaboration between AWRI and Flavourtech addresses the growing consumer demand for NOLO wines, which presents both opportunities and challenges for the wine industry. As consumers increasingly seek healthier and more diverse beverage options, the ability to produce high-quality NOLO wines becomes a competitive advantage. This initiative not only supports the Australian wine industry's adaptation to changing market trends but also contributes to its sustainability and innovation. By providing data-driven insights and advanced technology, the project enhances the industry's capacity to meet consumer expectations while maintaining the sensory complexity of traditional wines.
What's Next?
As the project progresses, AWRI and Flavourtech will continue to refine their techniques and share findings with the broader wine industry. The insights gained from the research facility could lead to the development of new standards and best practices for NOLO wine production. Additionally, the success of this initiative may encourage further investment in research and development within the wine sector, fostering innovation and competitiveness. The collaboration could also inspire similar projects in other regions, contributing to the global growth of the NOLO wine market.
