What's Happening?
Skywatchers will witness a rare Blue Moon that is also a 'micromoon' on May 31, 2026. This event marks the first time since August 2023 that two full moons occur in the same calendar month. The Blue Moon will be the smallest full moon of the year, as
it coincides with the moon's apogee, the farthest point in its orbit from Earth. The moon will appear slightly smaller and dimmer than usual, and observers will see the bright star Antares beneath it. The next monthly Blue Moon will occur on December 31, 2028.
Why It's Important?
The Blue Micromoon offers a unique opportunity for astronomers and enthusiasts to observe a rare celestial event. It highlights the moon's elliptical orbit and the variations in its appearance from Earth. Such events foster public interest in astronomy and provide educational opportunities to learn about lunar cycles and celestial mechanics. The Blue Micromoon also serves as a reminder of the intricate dynamics of our solar system and the beauty of astronomical phenomena.
