What's Happening?
GKN Aerospace has launched the TITAN-AM program in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. This $8.4 million initiative aims to advance Laser Metal Deposition with Wire (LMD-w) technology for aerospace applications. The program focuses
on industrializing LMD-w processes for large-scale titanium components, developing robust material datasets, optimizing design through advanced simulations, and implementing non-destructive inspection techniques. The project will be executed from GKN Aerospace's Global Technology Centre in Fort Worth, Texas, enhancing collaboration with U.S. defense and aerospace partners.
Why It's Important?
The TITAN-AM program represents a significant advancement in additive manufacturing for aerospace structures. By leveraging LMD-w technology, GKN Aerospace aims to produce lighter, stronger, and more sustainable components, reducing material waste and production lead times. This collaboration with the U.S. Air Force highlights the strategic importance of additive manufacturing in defense and commercial aerospace sectors. The program's success could lead to increased design freedom and efficiency in producing complex aerostructures, reinforcing the U.S.'s position in aerospace innovation.
