What's Happening?
Cynthia Erivo, a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy award-winning artist, is set to receive the inaugural Icon Award from the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. In conjunction with this honor, Erivo will announce the creation of two
scholarships: one for the USC School of Dramatic Arts and another, the Cynthia Erivo Film Bursary, for the University of Oxford. These scholarships aim to support students pursuing studies in drama, theater, film, and other entertainment fields. The initiative is backed by Jason and Yvonne Lee, the USC School of Dramatic Arts, and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. The awardees for these scholarships will be selected by the start of the fall-autumn 2026 terms. The announcement will be made during an event titled 'In Conversation with Cynthia Erivo,' scheduled for May 5 at the newly opened Sohmen Concert Hall at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities in Oxford.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of these scholarships by Cynthia Erivo is significant as it addresses the need for increased support and opportunities for students in the arts, particularly in drama and film. By providing financial assistance, these scholarships aim to reduce barriers for aspiring artists from diverse backgrounds, enabling them to pursue their education and careers in the entertainment industry. This initiative also highlights the importance of inclusivity and diversity in the arts, as emphasized by Dr. Stacy L. Smith, founder of the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. The scholarships are expected to foster a new generation of filmmakers and performers who can contribute to a more diverse and representative entertainment landscape.
What's Next?
The event featuring Cynthia Erivo and Dr. Stacy L. Smith will serve as a platform to discuss storytelling and entertainment, aligning with the mission of the Schwarzman Centre to convene leading artists and academics for meaningful discussions. Tickets for the event will be available to Schwarzman Centre Members starting April 6, and to the general public on April 13. The scholarships will be awarded to students by the beginning of the fall-autumn 2026 terms, providing them with the resources to engage with and pursue opportunities in the creative industries.
