What's Happening?
The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) has announced a new category in its annual Golden Kite Awards: the Golden Kite Award for Translation. This award will recognize outstanding works of children's literature translated into
English, with the first award to be presented in 2027 for a book published in 2026. The award includes a $2,500 prize, with an additional $500 for the honoree. Avery Fischer Udagawa, SCBWI’s global translator coordinator, played a significant role in establishing this award, emphasizing the importance of recognizing translators' contributions to literature. The award aims to support translators' careers and ensure they receive proper acknowledgment for their work, aligning with advocacy from organizations like the Authors Guild and PEN America.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the Golden Kite Award for Translation marks a significant step in acknowledging the vital role translators play in making children's literature accessible across different languages and cultures. This recognition not only supports the careers of translators but also highlights the importance of cultural exchange in literature. By ensuring translators are credited, the award promotes transparency and appreciation for the nuanced work involved in translation. This initiative could encourage more publishers to invest in translated works, thereby enriching the diversity of available children's literature and fostering a more inclusive literary landscape. It also aligns with broader industry trends towards recognizing the contributions of all individuals involved in the creation and dissemination of literature.
