What's Happening?
A recent analysis by SoFi has identified the best cities in the U.S. for starting a new business, highlighting a trend of increased entrepreneurial activity. In 2023, a record 5.5 million new business applications
were filed, continuing a trend that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis evaluated 50 cities with populations under 500,000, using criteria such as business applications, office space costs, unemployment rates, and cost of living. Miami, Minneapolis, and Atlanta emerged as top cities, each offering unique advantages for entrepreneurs. Miami leads with the highest number of new business applications and self-employment rates, while Minneapolis and Atlanta boast large working-age populations and supportive business environments.
Why It's Important?
The findings underscore the critical role of location in the success of new businesses. Cities like Miami, Minneapolis, and Atlanta provide fertile ground for entrepreneurs due to their supportive ecosystems, including access to a large workforce and business incentives. This trend reflects broader economic shifts, with the South and Midwest becoming hotspots for new business activity. The rise in entrepreneurship is significant for the U.S. economy, as small businesses employ nearly half of the workforce. The data suggests that cities offering a combination of economic incentives, a robust workforce, and a favorable cost of living are likely to attract more entrepreneurs, potentially driving local economic growth.
