What's Happening?
In the Roaring Fork Valley, the traditional Mexican Folklórico dance is experiencing a revival thanks to the efforts of former students and the local nonprofit Dance Initiative. After the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet's Folklórico program was discontinued earlier
this year due to the retirement of its director, three former students have taken the initiative to bring the program back. These students, who have been involved with the dance for over a decade, are now leading classes at the Third Street Center in Carbondale. The program aims to pass on the cultural heritage of Folklórico to a new generation, with classes attracting local elementary school students.
Why It's Important?
The revival of the Folklórico program in the Roaring Fork Valley is culturally significant as it preserves and promotes traditional Mexican dance and music. This initiative not only keeps the cultural heritage alive but also fosters community engagement and inclusivity. By involving young students, the program ensures that the tradition is passed down to future generations, enriching the cultural fabric of the area. Additionally, the involvement of a nonprofit organization highlights the role of community-driven efforts in sustaining cultural programs, which can inspire similar initiatives in other regions.
What's Next?
The Folklórico classes will continue throughout the coming months, with the teachers planning to showcase their students' progress in a community event later this summer. This event will serve as an opportunity to celebrate the cultural tradition and the hard work of the students and teachers. The success of this program could lead to further expansion and collaboration with other cultural organizations, potentially increasing the reach and impact of Folklórico in the region. The ongoing support from the community and local organizations will be crucial in sustaining and growing the program.
