What's Happening?
Capital One's acquisition of Discover Financial Services has resulted in significant job losses in the Chicagoland area. The merger, which was initially announced two years ago, has led to the layoff of 1,139 workers from Discover's former headquarters
in Riverwoods, Illinois. This is in addition to approximately 600 employees who were let go late last year. In total, more than 1,700 employees, including remote workers tied to the Riverwoods operation, have lost their jobs. This represents nearly half of the workforce that existed at the Riverwoods campus prior to the merger. The financial services sector is a critical component of the Illinois economy, with 6.4% of the state's workforce employed in this industry. The job cuts are particularly impactful in Lake County, which has not seen growth in financial services jobs over the past 25 years.
Why It's Important?
The job losses resulting from the Capital One and Discover merger highlight the broader economic challenges facing the Chicagoland area and Illinois as a whole. The financial services sector is a significant part of the local economy, and the reduction in jobs could have ripple effects on the region's economic stability. The layoffs also underscore the impact of corporate mergers and acquisitions on local employment, particularly in industries undergoing technological changes and cost-cutting measures. The situation raises concerns about the future of the Riverwoods campus and the potential for further economic decline in areas heavily reliant on financial services.
What's Next?
The future of the Riverwoods campus remains uncertain following the layoffs. Capital One has not yet disclosed its plans for the 25.5-acre site, which includes 1.1 million square feet of office space. The situation may prompt discussions about the potential repurposing of the campus, similar to the conversion of Allstate's former corporate campus into warehouses. The broader implications for the local economy and workforce will likely continue to be a topic of concern for policymakers and community leaders.
