What's Happening?
In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, House of SpeakEasy is launching a 27-day book tour across 28 cities in the original 13 colonies. The tour, starting on June 9 from Manhattan's Public Theatre, will distribute
6,000 free books. The Bookmobile, a custom-built 27-foot truck, will carry works by the Founding Fathers, American essays, poetry, and contemporary literature. The launch event will feature a literary cabaret with notable figures such as poet Terrance Hayes and playwright Heidi Schreck, co-hosted by journalist John Avlon and Library of America President Max Rudin.
Why It's Important?
This initiative highlights the importance of literature in celebrating American history and culture. By distributing free books, House of SpeakEasy aims to promote literacy and access to diverse literary works. The tour also underscores the role of literature in fostering national identity and understanding of historical contexts. It provides an opportunity for communities to engage with American history and contemporary issues through literature, potentially inspiring future generations of readers and writers.
