What's Happening?
Embark CEO and Nexon executive chairman Patrick Söderlund has announced that the studio is phasing out a significant portion of AI-generated voice work in its game, Arc Raiders. In an interview, Söderlund emphasized the superior quality of professional
human actors over AI-generated voices, stating that some lines have been re-recorded with real voices post-launch. Despite this shift, Embark continues to use AI as a production tool, valuing its efficiency in testing multiple lines before recording. The studio does not intend to replace human actors entirely with AI, acknowledging the limitations of AI in matching the quality of human performance.
Why It's Important?
This development highlights the ongoing debate in the gaming industry regarding the use of AI versus human talent. While AI offers cost and time efficiencies, the preference for human actors underscores the importance of quality and authenticity in creative works. This decision by Embark could influence other studios to reconsider their reliance on AI, potentially impacting employment opportunities for voice actors. Additionally, it raises ethical concerns about the role of AI in creative industries, balancing technological advancement with the preservation of human artistry.
