What's Happening?
Jorge Mejía, the president and CEO of Sony Music Publishing Latin America & U.S. Latin, has released a new classical album titled 'If These Walls Could Talk.' The album, recorded at Abbey Road Studios
with the London Symphony Orchestra, was released exclusively on Apple Music and Apple Music Classical on April 24. Mejía, an accomplished pianist and composer, presented the album live at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami. The narrative project is inspired by a historic Miami Beach building where Mejía once lived, and it explores themes of history and personal stories through music.
Why It's Important?
Mejía's dual role as a music executive and artist highlights the intersection of business acumen and creative talent in the music industry. His ability to balance these roles demonstrates the potential for executives to contribute artistically while managing significant business responsibilities. The album's release on major streaming platforms like Apple Music underscores the evolving landscape of music distribution, where digital platforms play a crucial role in reaching audiences. Mejía's work also reflects the growing interest in narrative-driven classical music, which can attract diverse audiences and expand the genre's appeal.
What's Next?
Following the album's release, Mejía plans a wider distribution on May 8 through Infusion/The Orchard/Sony. The success of 'If These Walls Could Talk' could lead to further projects that blend narrative and music, potentially inspiring other artists and executives to explore similar creative endeavors. As Mejía continues to navigate his roles, his experiences may influence industry practices, particularly in how executives engage with artistic production. The album's reception will be an indicator of the market's appetite for innovative classical music projects.
